- Botanical Name: Chamaedorea elegans
- Common Names: Neanthe bella palm, parlor palm
- Description: A compact indoor palm native to the rainforests of southern Mexico and Guatemala, grown for its soft, arching fronds and slow, tidy growth. It stays small enough for a desk or shelf for years and is one of the few palms that genuinely tolerates low light, which is why it has been a fixture in homes since the Victorian era.
- Care: Low to bright indirect light, never direct sun, which scorches the fronds. Water when the top inch of soil has dried and empty the saucer afterwards, as it dislikes standing water. Average room humidity is fine; brown frond tips usually mean the air is too dry. Feed a diluted balanced fertilizer every other month in spring and summer.
- Pets: Chamaedorea elegans is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Every plant ships as a young, well-rooted starter grown by our US nursery partners. Size and shape vary naturally, and photos show a mature example of the variety.
On arrival: unbox right away, rest the plant out of direct sun for a day or two, then water lightly. A few wilted or yellowed leaves after transit are normal.
Planting: pot up in a well-draining mix, or plant outdoors once frost risk has passed in your USDA zone. Each listing states zone, light and watering.
Safety: many ornamental plants are toxic if eaten. Keep them away from young children and pets unless the listing says the plant is edible.
