Plant Gifts

A plant is a good gift until it dies on someone's windowsill in February. Everything on this page is a set of houseplants picked to survive an ordinary home - not a florist's arrangement that looks perfect for a week and then goes in the bin.

Each set ships as one box, not separate parcels. That is what makes the price work: sending three plants together costs a fraction of sending three on their own, and the saving is already in the price you see.

Shop by budget

• Under $55 - a trio of small plants. The right size for a colleague, a Secret Santa or a housewarming.
• $55 to $95 - three to five plants, the usual choice for a friend or a sibling.
• Over $95 - larger plants in 6" pots that fill a corner rather than a shelf. For someone setting up a first flat, or a parent.

Shop by who it is for

• Someone with a cat or a dog. Start with our pet-safe houseplants - every plant on that list is checked one by one against the ASPCA non-toxic list, not copied from a supplier label.
• Someone who has killed plants before. The easy-care plants forgive a missed week of watering. Snake plants, pothos and ZZ plants are the honest answer here.
• Someone in a dark flat. A north-facing room kills most gift plants within a month. The low-light plants are the ones that actually hold up.
• Someone who already collects plants. They probably own a pothos. Look at the rare and collector plants instead.

For Christmas

Our seasonal boxes - a living Christmas tree, a red-and-green set, a silver winter palette and a set of plants that flower when nothing else indoors does - are in Holiday Gift Sets.

What you should know before ordering a plant as a gift

These are living plants, so a few things are worth saying plainly.

• They arrive in nursery pots, rooted and ready to drop into a decorative pot. We say so because "gift plant" photos online often show a ceramic pot that is not included.
• Winter shipping protection is included. From 1 November to 30 April every order ships with it - a multi-day heat pack, and an insulated liner or a faster service when the forecast on the route calls for it. You are not charged extra for it. If a hard freeze is forecast we hold the parcel a day or two rather than send it, so we cannot promise a specific December date.
• Live Arrival Guarantee. If something arrives damaged or unhealthy, send us photos within 30 days and we replace the plant or refund you. You do not need to ship anything back.

Free shipping on orders of $49 or more, to all 48 contiguous states. Under $49, shipping is a flat $9.95 - and every set on this page is over $49.
